What are the different groups of stains used in pathology examinations, and how are they differentiated in terms of coding in 2024?
Special stains are also performed at the request of the pathologist in addition to the surgical pathology examination. Depending on the type of specimen and the reason for the pathology examination, different stains may be required to highlight or outline cells for identification. These are differentiated into two groups: Group I for identifying microorganisms (88312) and Group II for all other conditions (88313), excluding immunocytochemistry and immunoperoxidase (+88314). Code +88314 describes histochemical staining with frozen section(s).
