Laboratory Question for the Week of April 22, 2024

Question:

What do the category III codes for digital pathology represent in 2023 and are there any new additional codes effective in 2024?

Answer:

In 2023, 13 new Category III CPT codes were added for reporting of digital pathology (0751T–0763T). These codes represent add-on services intended for the purpose of tracking and trending additional work required for glass slide scanning and digitization. The codes became effective January 1, 2023, and may be reported on outpatient claims in addition to corresponding primary diagnostic pathology procedures (88302–88309 and 88312–88360). For 2024, an additional 30 Category III codes were added for digital pathology services (0827T-0856T).
