Question:

Do you have any additional guidelines for modifiers LT and RT?

Answer:

These modifiers apply to codes that identify procedures that can be performed on paired body parts or organs, such as the breasts. Hospitals are instructed to use the appropriate modifier (RT or LT) to identify the breast on which the procedure was performed. These modifiers should be used on surgical procedure codes (10xxx–69xxx), as well as certain diagnostic and S&I codes (7xxxx range) for mammography services. The LT and RT modifiers should not be used when modifier 50 applies, unless otherwise instructed by the payer. The LT and RT modifiers should be used whenever a procedure is performed on only one side.
