When should we report 88104 as opposed to 88106?

Answer:

Codes 88104 and 88106 are used to report the cytology of fluids, washings, or brushings (except cervical or vaginal). “Code 88104 is used to report cytology evaluation of smear specimens, including alcohol fixed, Papanicolaou, direct smear with 95 percent ethanol, or liquid fixative.”Code 88106 is for filtration techniques only. For a monolayer technique, report 88112.
