Question:

What is the purpose of code 94610 in the management of premature infants?

Answer:

Direct tracheal instillation of surfactant is indicated in the care of premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) due to surfactant deficiency. Intrapulmonary surfactant is a very special substance—a mixture of phospholipids, neutral lipids, and proteins that coats the inside of the lungs and allows a patient to draw breath, thereby reducing the work of breathing.
