Question:

Do you have any tips for reporting modifier 76?

Answer:

If the same physician repeats a procedure or service in a separate session on the same day, modifier 76 may be used. It may also be assigned when physicians order services that are performed by technicians, such as mammography. To report this correctly, list the procedure code once and then list it again with the modifier added on a separate line item. Report the number of times the procedure was repeated on separate lines, rather than using the unit’s field to indicate multiple occurrences on the same day. For Medicare, modifier 76 may be used to override NCCI medically unlikely edits (MUEs), but it cannot be used to override procedure-to-procedure (PTP) edits.
