What is the correct way to report two drugs that are administered at the same time through two separate IV lines?
Answer:
When clinical indications support the need for simultaneous management of two separate IV lines and the medications administered are incompatible or pose a patient safety risk when administered through multi-lumen to the same access site, the requirement for such would be documented in the medical record and would support the coding of two initial infusions plus appropriate additional hours.
When medical indication and documentation support the management of separate IV lines, each line will follow the AMA hierarchy for coding of initial CPT. The first billed line item would be reported as usual, per the hierarchy for the service, without a modifier appended. The second billed line item would be reported
