As Doctors Day approaches, we took a moment to ask physicians, advisors, and documentation professionals a simple question: what does this work really feel like right now?
The responses were thoughtful, honest, and, in many cases, deeply reflective of the reality behind the role.
What stood out immediately was the strong sense of purpose. Whether directly caring for patients or supporting documentation and compliance behind the scenes, many described their work as meaningful in ways that go beyond what’s visible day to day. Improving outcomes, solving complex problems, mentoring others, and making sure the full story of patient care is accurately captured are some moments that continue to drive them.
At the same time, there’s a clear and consistent tension that runs through the responses.
Nearly every respondent pointed to documentation, regulatory requirements, or administrative demands as one of the most challenging parts of their role. And while these responsibilities are essential, they often compete with time, focus, and the ability to fully engage in the work that matters most. In fact, the majority shared that documentation and administrative tasks have a significant or major impact on their day-to-day responsibilities.
There’s also a recurring theme that feels especially important: the gap between the work being done and how that work is represented. Many expressed that the complexity of their clinical thinking or decision-making doesn’t always translate cleanly into documentation. That disconnect can affect not only coding and reimbursement, but also how their expertise is perceived and understood.
As one respondent shared, “There’s a lot happening behind every decision we make — and not all of it fits neatly into a note.”
And for many, it’s not just about the documentation itself but about the weight of constantly navigating competing priorities.
Another respondent put it simply: “You’re balancing patient care, compliance, and time — and it often feels like something has to give.”
One of the most powerful insights came from what people wish others understood about their role. The sentiment was clear: this work is more complex, more nuanced, and more demanding than it often appears. It requires clinical knowledge, analytical thinking, and a constant awareness of how documentation, compliance, and patient care intersect.
This is demanding work that requires a great deal from physicians and their teams.
So, this Doctors Day, it feels important to pause and recognize not just physicians, but the broader community supporting them. The physician advisors, nurse auditors, and documentation professionals who are helping ensure that care is not only delivered, but clearly and accurately represented.
Because behind every chart, every coded encounter, and every documented decision, there’s a professional working to get it right.
And as one respondent shared, “At the end of the day, we just want to know that the work we’re doing matters — and that it’s understood.”
And it is.
At RACmonitor, that understanding is at the heart of everything we do. We’re here to support you with the insights and education you need, because the work you do deserves to be recognized, understood, and supported every step of the way.
