Question:

When are new 2024 codes 76984, 76987, and 76989 reported?

Answer:

Used primarily in cardiothoracic surgery procedures, intraoperative cardiac ultrasound is used during surgical procedures to evaluate cardiovascular structures, provide real-time information that may impact the surgical strategy (i.e., changing cannulation strategies, changing bypass targets), and identify any additional defects. Code 76984 is used to report intraoperative ultrasound of the thoracic aorta and is not to be reported for intraoperative cardiac ultrasound. Code 76987 includes both the image acquisition and interpretation and report. For image acquisition only, report code 76988. For interpretation and report only, report code 76989.
